Rangers of Shadow Deep, Mission 1, Scenario 2: The Infected Trees.
Moving right along Blackwulf and the boys continue their quest!

Intro:
“Examining the bodies of the zombies, along with the other clues from the village, left little doubt. The village had been attacked by some horrific species of giant spider, whose venom reanimated the dead. Thankfully, such creatures move slowly. Likely, they will have retreated to the nearest shelter to slowly feast upon the missing villagers. Your duty is clear. Taking just enough time to patch up your wounds, and make a quick pyre for the dead, you set off after the spiders, following their faint, but unique tracks. After nearly a day’s pursuit, the tracks lead into a small forest. Chances are the spiders are not too deep in the woods. You must find them, destroy them and any nests they might have made, and, if you are lucky, rescue any survivors.

Preliminaries- Blackwulf has Skuti make both a Track (6) and Survival (14)Checks. The don’t arrive at the infected forest at any quickened pace but He does find some Farlight Leaf
Skuti consumes 1 dose Farlight Leaf (+1 Shoot, -1 Fight -1 Will )
Thorvald consumes 1 does Haikwheat (+2 Health)
All die rolls are shown as (x) combat rolls are (x,x) the first number always being the heroes
This mission last 10 turns
RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf does not group activate any of his companions but does have open line of sight
To a spider near the center cocoon roughly 12 inches away he decides to fire his bow
Blackwulf then moves 6 inches.
CREATURE PHASE
COMPANION PHASE
SIgurd moves 6 inches and searches a nearby Cocoon (1) he finds the dead body of a village
Guthrum moves 2 and engages and oncoming foul spider.
Skuti drafts Blackwulf and can see an oncoming spider thru some trees it’s a difficult shot with intervening terrain, light cover and a hurried shot but he is embolded by the farlight leaf, he shoots (8,11) after modifiers equaling (11, 15) and misses
Gord moves 6 inches to a Cocoon (7) and also finds the body of a dead villager.
Thorvald moves to guard Gord and waits
EVENT PHASE
“Nest Tree. Place another next tree on the table, 12” from the center point of the table
in a random direction. Place one giant spider and one treasure token adjacent to it.”
Random roll puts this nest tree about 6” from Thorvald and Gord.
“As Thorvald moves to protect Gords flank , Oh Shite another one!” he points to new mysterious tree nest that has appeared.
TURN 2
RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf group activates with Skuti
Blackwulf realizes with the extra tree nest appearing that Gord and Thorvald are soon outnumbered he moves right 6 inches thru the trees and fires his bow at the newly appeared spider
I have him choose to use his “Steady Aim” Heroic Ability here (18,4) (+2 shoot +5 Steady Aim -1 move) equals a massive 24 to 4 win minus the 8 armor, 16 damage to spider . Blackwulf has the dice gods on his side again he didn’t need the ability here and another Spider falls dead.
Skuti decides to break left and move 6 inches toward Sigurd and Guthrum…he also has a spider in his sights. (11,9) Skuti is +3 shoot but -1 for the move so 13 to 9 he wins – 8 armor is 5 damage enough to also kill it,
The Spiders are no threat to the Rangers bows.
CREATURE PHASE
Spider is already engaged with Guthrum , it attacks (13,10) Guthrum is +3 fights so wins 16 to 10 , 8 damage to the Spider it is squashed
Spider moves 6 attacks Blackwulf it get the jump on him 3, 14 or 14 to 6….Blackwulf armor is 11 so he take 3 damage from the Spider , but the Spider is also Poisonous!
Blackwulf is poisoned.
Poison in RoSD is a rough, you are limted to one action, can only be healed by a full heal or items that specifically cure poison.
COMPANION PHASE
Thorvald rushes to Blackwulfs aid.. the combat is now even at 2 vs 2, Thorvald swings his mighty hammer (15,16) Thorvald is +3 fight so he wins with an 18 crushing the Bug.
Gord moves to the nearby tree nest and picks up the treasure token, he must wait to set the tree nest on fire
Guthrum drives ahead with a double move toward the western most Tree Nest

TURN 3
RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf group activates Thorvald
Blackwulf attacks spider in combat with it…(8,6) with +3 fight he wins with an 11 but its not enough to kill the spider, its still alive and fighting
Thorvald moves up and attacks (15,19) Thorvald is +3 Fight but he gets +2 for Blackwulf in the 2 vs 1 scenario He wins 20 to 19..the Spider dies
CREATURE PHASE
No Creatures on the board at the moment
COMPANION PHASE
Sigurd searches the Coccoon. (15) He finds another dead body, wait its moving it shambles out of the Cocoon a ZOMBIE!
Guthrum moves 6 to to the Tree Nest and sets it a fire with a torch, up in flames it goes
Gord lights the tree nest he in contact with aflame as well Whoosh up it goes

Skuti fires an Arrow at the Zombie that just popped out of the Cocoon by Sigurd (9,19) intervening terrain as well -1 he misses badly

RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf group activates with Thorvald
Blackwulf uses his “heal” spell to gain 5 health, since he is fully healed the Spider Poison is cured!
He then makes a second move to toward the center Cocoon
Thorvald moves 6 and waits to support Gord
CREATURE PHASE
ZOMBIE moves 4 inches into Sigurd and attacks! (18,20) Sigurd is +3 fight he wins it by one Zombie armor is 12 but the rolls is high enough Sigurd Kills it
SPIDER moves 6 attacks Guthrum! (16, 19) Guthrum is +3 Fight so its Tied both figures take damage from a 19 ..Guthrum are armor 11 takes 8 damage and is poisoned, the Spider takes 8 damage and is split in two and killed, in a brutal fight Guthrum barely survives and is poisoned.
COMPANION PHASE
Guthrum wounded and poisoned makes his way toward others (moves 6)
Gord searches the Cocoon he is in contact with (11) Survivor! He finds a surviving villagers barely alive.
EVENT PHASE

TURN 5
RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf isn’t close enough to his companions for a group activation
He moves into contact with the center cocoon and searches it (17)
CREATURE PHASE
The Zombie immediately attacks Blackwulf (1,11) Blackwulf loses the fight but thankfully his armor saves him
COMPANION PHASE
Guthrum makes a single move toward Gord , Thorvald and the Village Survivor
Sigurd moves 6 into contact with the large tree nest and sets it aflame!
Skuti moves up 6 inches looking for Spiders
Gord with Survivor in tow move to the eastern most tree nest

RANGER PHASE
Blackwulf group activates with Thorvald
For now he fights the Zombie alone.. (13,16)…with fight +3 the fight is a tie and both take damage from a 16 , Blackwulf taking 5 damage and the Zombie taking 4.
All the Cocoons have been accounted for
CREATURE PHASE
The Spider leaps from the tree nest to attack Gord (13,8) Gord wins with 14 sticking it with his dagger the damage is -1 so 13 vs 8 – 5 damage enough to kill it!
COMPANION PHASE
Gord returns the favor and lights the dead spider and its Tree Nest on fire with is Torch
Guthrum, moves 6 inch to the Villager
Sigurd makes a double move reach the last remaining tree nest
Skuti follows looking for Spiders

8 xp for no tree nests left on the table at the end of secenario
10xp for a survivor living thru the scenario
18 + 20 +25 +8 +10 = 81 XP total
All companions gain 1 Progression Point
Treasure Token = roll ( 13) Weapon and Armor roll (10)

Not sure who is getting this yet, either Blackwulf or Sigurd
Overall thoughts:
A fun but seemingly easy scenario, despite again rolling exceptionally well for the swingy D20, (eventually my luck is going to run out right?) I feel like either there needs to be a lot more spiders Or the spiders need to be tougher OR potentially more events with undead villagers
Also again, my heroic abilities didn’t really need to come into play with the exception of Heal
I’m sure that will change as things look to get tougher quickly.
I am loving this game so I am going to keep cranking these out while I'm on Christmas Break hopefully at least one more before year end. Happy Holidays folks.
