But before recommending anything, our clients' inputs are very important. I need to know about the things on what and why they want a specific software.
Here are the things that I am always including that are needed in a new rig.
1. Operating System
As we all know, Microsoft Windows is the staple operating system with regards to desktops in the market. But its prices are also somehow pricey. If our clients are willing to go with free OS (Linux), then the better. Linux distros at the moment are getting easy to migrate to. So, if no specific reason why buy Microsoft Windows, I am recommending Linux (Ubuntu or Mint) as the OS to go.
2. Hardware Drivers
To avoid future problems and troubles if you want to do "more than the basics" to your rig, never forget this step specially if your a MS Windows user. For Linux, a simple update and upgrade command will do the trick.
3. Office Suite
Same as the aforementioned, usually free and/or open source office suites right now are all compatible with MS Office. It is NOT as hard just like with determining the operating system because FOSS could be the tool to open and export files to an MS office application. But for me, I usually recommend the WPS Suite for a 98% smooth transition to the MS Office.
(See my previous assessment on the WPS Office Suite)
4. Antivirus
This is NO brainer. There are alot of free and really good desktop AV out in the web. As for Windows Server OSs, I am also very satisfied with the Malwarebytes AV.
(See my previous assessment on the Malwarebytes AV)
5. Compression and encryption
What I am recommending 7zip. No questions asked!

OVERALL THOUGHTSAs you have observed, I usually recommend software that are platform free which means the aforementioned software would work on a Windows, Linux, and MAC boxes.
If you think I forgot something, give your suggestions on the comments!
~Cheers!
